When designing and creating a banner for your business, there’s a lot of things that you need to keep in mind to ensure its success. Unlike other printed marketing materials, the aim of banners is to attract attention, usually from a distance, so they need to be quickly readable from afar. Because of this, certain aspects of the design need to be emphasized to ensure that this is the case. There are other important points that you should keep in mind when trying to design an effective banner so let’s take a look at what these are:

Understand your message

It’s very important to understand what you are wanting the banner to achieve. Do you want to showcase a particular aspect of your business? Are promoting brand awareness? Do you have an existing tagline or unique sales message? Do you want viewers to take a specific action? Keep the message as simple as possible, but be sure to include necessary information that will help bring the results you want. Most successful banners are quite simplistic in terms of the actual text content and feature nothing more than a few words, this is due to the fact that banners need to communicate your message in as little time as possible. Try to communicate your message the simplest way you can. Less is more and makes your message stand out.

Select the right font size and type

As the aim of a banner is to attract attention from a distance, it’s crucial to ensure that any content written on the banner is in a large enough and importantly, readable font. By neglecting this, it’s unlikely that your banner will be readable to anyone more than a few meters away. There are a lot of different fonts available and it can be tempting to choose an overly creative one but when it comes to banners, you always need to factor in readability so a simple font is usually the best option.

Choose appropriate colours

We have mentioned that the aim of the banner is to stand out so your colour choices should need to be on target as this is what the audience will first notice. The colours should contrast with the surrounding environment to ensure the banner stands out but you also need to ensure you use the right colours to attract the response you need from the audience. Keep in mind that all colours have different associations and evoke different emotions and colours can also have different associations in different cultures. Make sure you do your research, understand you target audience and know the results you are wanting to achieve when selecting colours.

Stay on brand

Although you ultimately want your banner to attract attention, you should also keep your brand in mind throughout the entire design process. Just because a certain colour might be the brightest or the most on trend, it doesn’t necessarily mean it should be used in your banner design if it doesn’t fit in with your brand.  You need to let the personality of your business shine through and match your banner colours to your logo and any other branding associated with your business to ensure consistency across all marketing mediums.
